We sell a lot of chicks, but our focus is not on selling numbers – we are more concerned about their wellbeing than about selling. We are an organic farm, placing a lot of emphasis on the sustainability side of things, but also on the health of our plants and animals, because the healthier they are, the healthier we are and the healthier our environment is. Ethical farming and breeding is therefore super important for us.

That means that when we sell chicks, we will always ask you how you will bring them up in terms of housing. Day olds require a heat source for the first 6 weeks, clean bedding, appropriate feed, appropriate (safe and easy) access to food and water, and importantly, they cannot and should not be mixed in the same cage with older chicks. A couple of days older may be ok, but a few weeks older certainly will not be ok. The older chicks can and will peck the day olds, often to death. So, we prefer not to sell chicks than selling them knowing they are doomed. Further, a heat pack will not be enough as a heat source, hence you will need either a heat plate or a heat lamp, and we always discuss this arrangement with you when you get chicks from us and provide feedback.

I hope you all understand where we are coming from and we apologise in advance to those of you we decide not to sell chicks to if we feel that you don’t have the proper arrangement. The wellbeing of our animals is far more important to us than money.
