HATCHING EGGS OUT OF SEASON

A friendly note to all our followers and customers.

The hatching season has been completed. Late winter, spring and early summer are the best months to hatch eggs as temperatures are the most favourable for both fertility rates and transportation, plus also for broody hens.

However, here at Agia Skepi we continue to offer hatching eggs throughout the summer and autumn because we still (as always) closely monitor the fertility of our pens and hatch our eggs, and we know many of you are interested in hatching, just as we are.

But we would like to emphasise that the risks of purchasing hatching eggs out of season are higher. Even eggs that have been collected can become compromised if exposed to higher temperatures during transportation (e.g. in a hot car) or under a broody hen on a hot day. Postage is even riskier during summer again because the eggs can be exposed to higher temperatures during transportation. In addition, many incubators are not as good at maintaining the right temperature and humidity when it’s very hot.

Please keep all the above in mind when ordering hatching eggs from any breeder during the warmer months. And let us not forget that risks can often have amazing outcomes as the saying goes “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. As long as we are well informed and take a calculated risk, so everyone stays happy!
