Often, we get asked “Are your chicks or eggs purebred?” The short answer is yes, for the breeds we keep in separate pens and no, for the specially mated crosses that produce olive or Easter eggers.

However, it is important to keep in mind that not all eggs from a purebred line will give you show quality chickens. Of course, our breeders (the adult chickens we use for breeding) are the best of the flock and we always work towards improving their characteristics according to the Poultry Standard for each specific breed.

But even show quality breeders will not always give you chicks that are show quality.

And in most cases, you cannot tell if a chick is show quality until it’s fully grown. Let alone fertile eggs! It is very important that we understand this before we hatch eggs or purchase chicks from any breeder, so we have the correct expectations. It is also important to read the standards for the breed we are purchasing if we intent to breed these chickens and not only use them as a backyard flock, so we can all work towards improving their characteristics according to the breed.
