The Leghorn is a well-known Italian heritage chicken, with its origins in the beautiful rural Tuscany. They are a breed most commonly used as egg layers, with the white Leghorns having given their genetics to numerous hybrid projects that have resulted in commercial layers and new breeds. Medium-sized birds, found both in standard and bantam form, the Leghorns have a large single comb (a rose comb is permitted in some countries), bright yellow legs and white ear lobes. They lay a good size white egg and are consistent layers, hence their importance and usage in commercial egg production. They rarely go broody, are hardy in nature, and are fantastic scavengers.
